This is my favorite tree to camp under- I love to wake up in the morning and see it

Postcards

To celebrate my 30th postcard, I have randomly listed 30 things I love the best:

1. Taking my dogs to the dog park

2. Ice cubes. Like I said before:  party in your glass

3. Frosted sugar cookies

4. New socks

5. New shoes to go with the new socks

6. My nieces and nephews

7. Driving around Napa with my sister Teri drinking hot chocolate from 7-11 or a ginormous ice tea from a can (depends on the season), just shooting the breeze and maybe going to Target if I’ve been especially good. Being free-range with Teri is just the best!

8. Beets- all vegetables, really. I had a great conversation with a friend (I promised him that he would remain anonymous) about how beets turn everything red (if you know what I’m sayin’)

9. Changing chords quickly while I am playing the banjo (okay, so I am not that fast at all, but I’m working on it)

10. Watching Lucille swim- that dog paddles like she’s being chased by sharks!

11. Hearing my sister’s children call my Mom “Grams” it is pretty sweet and kinda heartwarming and it makes me feel guilty for trying to get them to call her “Me Maw” (but not that guilty)

12. The way my dogs are so happy to see me when I come in the door and it doesn’t matter if I’ve been gone all day or 5 minutes- they are always happy to see me

Lucille

13. The way my students are so excited to see me and it doesn’t matter if I’ve been gone all day or…

14. When someone calls me “friend”- I just love that!

15. The way compost smells

16. Camping under my favorite tree at Strawberry Music Festival

17. My family

18. Cake with lots of frosting

19. Going to Zumba with my friend Cheryl and making her laugh (did I mention that I’m not coordinated and she is?)

20. Sundance Books- they have a huge selection of books and cards, plus I can bring my dogs in while I browse

21. My husband’s laugh

22. Practical jokes that are actually funny and don’t involve water, farm animals or mail order brides. Earlier this month, I came home to find a 1971 Dodge camper van thingy in my driveway. I named it Big Red and began making semi-serious plans about where I was going to take it camping. Red was so big that it blocked out the sun, had a funky smell and I was scared to drive it because it was such a beast. I was the proud owner for about a day and half until the real owner came back for it. It now lives in front of his house and I hear his neighbors are not happy about it.

This bad boy was mine for about 13 hours...I love you Big Red!

23. Spring, summer and fall

24. Chubby kitties

25. When Clementine curls up on my lap- I feel like I’ve won a huge prize and that’s pretty great

26. The grilled cheese sandwiches my Mom makes me- they are so good!

27. The way my Dad thought I was pretty great

28. The finger picks I wear for playing the banjo

29.  When Lillian puts her long lady toes on the heater vent to warm them up- that dog has some freaky long toes!

30.  Sleeping in on the weekend and not having Walter jump on my head nineteen thousand times

Just one more- which makes this one really # 31- taking the day off and having coffee with a friend (Thanks, Ruby!)

Postcard #27 “What Makes Me Happy”

Posted on October 30, 2011. Filed under: Postcards | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Hello again! My brain is full of second graders, Halloween candy and banjo rolls so I am turning to the Chat Pack to help!

This week’s question is: If you made a list of the five things (not people!) that make you the happiest in your life, what five things would you write down?

Well…

1. Ice cubes. I finally have a fridge that gets cold enough to make ice cubes and I make sure to keep the tray filled with water so I can always have cubes when I need them. I think ice cubes make me happy because they are a little party in a glass waiting to happen.

2. Chubby kitty fleece. A couple of years ago I was wearing an especially fuzzy fleece jacket while visiting a friend. His youngest son was about 5 years old at the time and really into cats. He sat by me and proceeded to pet my arm while saying, “oh, chubby kitty.” So since then anything that is soft, cozy, cuddly or warm is referred to as a “chubby kitty”. They make me happy because they are soft and warm, sort of like wearing a sleeping bag, which brings me to the next thing that makes me happy…

3. Camping. There are pictures of me as a baby hanging in a tree wearing pink footie pajamas and a smile. One of my favorite places to be is in a tent snuggled down in a sleeping bag. Camping makes me happy: being outside, the feeling of being miles away from everyone else and of course, the smell of pine trees. I could go camping every weekend in the summer and it still wouldn’t be enough.

4. Waking up in the morning and finding out that my cat Clementine asleep at the end of the bed. There are many comfortable places in the house to sleep (especially those chubby kitty jackets I leave around) and I am always happy when Clem chooses to sleep with me. Clementine is one cool kitty and she makes me happy.

5. Dogs. I didn’t think I was a dog person, but I was. After becoming a dog owner, I’ve learned there’s something really special about them. Maybe it’s the way they are genuinely excited when I come home or perhaps it’s the way they make me be a better and happier person. Sure they need to be walked and you can’t leave them alone for a long time, but they’re worth it.  If you own a dog you know what I’m talking about.

There you go, there’s my 5. What’s yours?

Postcard #26 “Dump Cake, Boston Terriers and Bill Murray”

Posted on September 28, 2011. Filed under: Postcards | Tags: , , , , |

It’s no secret I love Boston Terriers, Bill Murray and casseroles. While all three are delicious, appealing and great on a Saturday night, casseroles might be the only not out of place at a church potluck. Out of all the casseroles out there, my favorite is Dump Cake. It doesn’t have crushed potato chips or tuna with sour cream and noodles, but it is delicious, requires very little prep and clean up and you can make it while you’re drunk. Perhaps I’m putting too much thought into this, but Dump Cake is delicious. So the next time you’re invited to some shindig, bring a Dump Cake, because everyone likes desert.

I love Dump Cake because it is easy. Got a can opener?  Working oven? How about butter? You’re halfway there! It takes very little skill to open cans and mix this baby up, but the payoff is fantastic. If my dogs had thumbs and could be trusted around an oven I’d let them make it for me.  While the prep time is quick, the baking time is about an hour, so plan on staying home while it cooks.

 Curious?  Here’s the recipe:

You probably have most if not all of the four ingredients in your pantry: a can of crushed pineapple (pour the juice in with the fruit), a can of cherry pie filling and a box of white cake mix. Great ingredients, but the real superstar is the butter.  A stick and a half to be exact. Cut up the butter into chunks and shove them in the mixture- it’s okay to not let the butter soften before you cut it- it’ll melt just fine in the oven.  I forgot to mention to dump the first three ingredients into a baking dish and then shove the butter chunks in before you cover it with foil (Reynolds Wrap is the preferred foil and official sponsor of The 52 Postcards Project). Take the foil off during the last ten minutes of baking so it browns nicely. Remember to use oven mitts because that pan is hot! Wait… that reminds me of one of my other favorite things: Bill Murray…mmmmmm. I bet he’d like some Dump Cake.Want the real recipe? Go to: http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1941,135187-243193,00.html
